For over 30 years, Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard has been producing hand-crafted, artisanal wines known for their character and personality. Our approach to winemaking is to optimize the inherent potential in the grapes, a potential born not only of the vine but of the environment.
The French use the term terroir to describe how the location of where the grapes are grown – the soil, the air, the climate – can impart a unique personality to the wine. At Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard, we let the terroir determine the style of each wine, rather than forcing the grapes to make wine of some preconceived type.
The winery uses primarily Santa Cruz Mountains Appellation grapes, as we have found that this cool, mountainous region produces wines of superior quality and longevity.
Winemaking is a dedicated affair of the heart at Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard, and we believe the enjoyment of good wine should be an experience accessible to everyone. This means making high quality, food-oriented wines at a fair price, and keeping the snobbery and pretension out of the way of this most alluring ancient pleasure.
Location
Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard is located in the Santa Cruz Mountains between the town of Boulder Creek and Big Basin State Park. It is four miles outside of Boulder Creek on China Grade, off of Highway 236. We are in the same facility as Big Basin Vineyards. The winery was built in 2004 and is a beautiful timber-frame made mostly of redwood that was custom milled on the property.
The business office of Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard is located in the town of Felton, just north of Santa Cruz in the San Lorenzo River Valley.
We are happy to offers tours and tastings at the winery by advance appointment. We don’t have a standard tasting room as we prefer to give each customer our full attention and a personalized visit. Detailed directions will be provided when you contact us for an appointment.

Jeff Emery is the proprietor, winemaker, truck driver, chief paper pusher, tasting room manager, and basically anything else he needs to be to make this small business work. He first came to Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard in July of 1979 and ended up working with Ken Burnap, the winery's founder, in what can best be described as an old-fashioned apprenticeship. Jeff took over the business in 2002 when Ken retired. See the History section of this website for more details.

Andrea Webster married Jeff in 1990 and managed to immediately absorb the nuances of what goes on at the winery. Her role at the winery is mainly during tasting events when the wines are presented to the public and the trade. Her main vocation is as a reference librarian for the City of Watsonville and Cabrillo College.

Denis Hoey came to Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard in the spring of 2004 to help with the massive job of moving the winery to its present location. He has continued on as an extra hand in the cellar, helping with the processing of new wines in the fall and working with the finished wine in barrels the rest of the year.

Susan Pufahl is in charge of words at Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard. She makes sure that people can understand what Jeff is trying to say in any printed materials regarding the winery by keeping his rambling writings under control. She is also the co-designer of the Wine Club and much of the web site content and is pretty darn handy to have around at crush time, too. In her other life she performs music with her husband as Dana and Susan Robinson, www.robinsongs.com |

Vicki Boriack has been helping with events at the winery since 1997. She is the friendly and knowledgeable face seen behind the table when Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard goes on the road for special tastings, or during our special events like the annual Vintner’s Festival. |

Zima and Iris work in public relations, vermin control, and provide general amusement and entertainment for the winery. Iris in particular makes sure that any food dropped on the ground doesn’t have time to go bad. Zima is a Samoyed-Husky-Wolf and Iris is a Samoyed-Labrador. They are first cousins and share a pure-bred Samoyed grandmother, but you’d never know that to look at Iris. |
